My Photography Favourites: Ric Coles

Richard Coles in a Multi-disciplined photographer, programmer and guitarist. Here I am going to look at a few of his great photography skills which are showcased on his Flickr profile. He won’t admit by any means that his work is going to be up in the Tate or M.o.m.a anytime soon. But he has a raw feel to his photos and opens up to show vulnerabilities of his character, with personal photos.

‘Black and White Creep’: Taken on a foggy winter’s evening in October, this photo is the result of a night just going out an exploring the environment around you. Seeing a different side to environments you inhabit everyday but produce a new side of life in the darkness of night.

‘Fog’: Again taken on the same night as the previous photo this was taken in Leverhulme park in Breightmet (Bolton.) The photo’s depiction of the lonely man (Richard himself) shows a vulnerability. The lights above and around him really shine through well around the dark silhouetted figure.

‘Ranch’: The photo itself was taken on a late summer holiday trip away in Tenby Wales, in a small camping site. The photo was then processed in Photoshop and is credited to have used textures by Pink Sherbert photography. The textures used overlaid on top of this original photograph really give it a real old school edge and grain to a great scene out in the dales of Tenby, Wales.

‘Motorway’: Taken with a Nikon D50, this photo was created with an 8 second exposure (with tripod) on a motorway bridge. I love long exposure shots and especially with heavy volumes of traffic, you really get a sense of the hectic rush and speed in all our lives.

‘My Broken Heart’:Originally envisenged as more of a conceptual photography idea, this photo really shows you richards feelings at this time in his life as he got over a difficult time. Bringing out true emotions in this picture really brings you closer to his character.

‘Dawn’ : Taken in the early morning when the birds are singing and the sun is about to rise, the photo captivates the dead of the early morningĀ  just before the morning rush of the next day.
